Day 13 - Lejog 2024

The breakfast did disappoint! We did at least see a person but only fleetingly as they  brought out our poorly cooked breakfast! It was a cramped dining room sitting on stools and an increasingly crowded table as no empties were collected. A place to avoid it you ever visit Inverness. Anyway, back to today's cycling it was a day of two halves. In the morning the cloudy start persisted so the views were not great. But after our lunch stop at Bonar Bridge, it was a glorious sunny afternoon and some wonderful scenery especially at The Falls of Shin where we saw salmon attempting to leap upstream against a strong current. Earlier in the day, a friend who used to be a work colleague was there at the roadside to cheer us on. I will be staying with the family for a few days after our cycle adventure finishes tomorrow. We cycled into Lairg with the beautiful Loch Shin sparkling in the sunshine. This is where we are staying the night. But our cycling was not yet complete as there was still a further 14 miles to the Crask Inn, otherwise it would have meant close to 100 miles for our final day. The Crask Inn must be Scotland's most isolated inn. It was donated to the Scottish Episcopal Church by its previous owners so uniquely there is evening prayer everyday at 5pm and an informal service once a month which typically attracts 15 -20 people. There was a warm welcome from the proprietor and also a few feathered friends!

Road Conditions

On the tour we have encountered a wide range of road conditions. There were some roads which were close to being washed away. There were sections of cobbled stones as we made our way through Edinburgh. Some of the roads as we entered Scotland were extremely lumpy. But today, in the Highlands we cycled on a road which was by far the best one yet.  This was in our final 14 miles from Lairg to The Crask Inn. Much of the surface had been recently re-laid and it felt like cycling on a smooth carpet. A great ride to finish a wonderful day.
